Two Million Homes for Mexico and Enanitos Toreros, which is a portrait series on dwarf bullfighters, are both fascinating. What else can I say – take a look at the photos and statements for yourself.

Jeffrey Aaronson’s Borderland (larger photos at PhotoLucida) series is a really telling look at people and culture in the areas near the US-Mexican border. Claire Beckett’s photos of military trainings show ‘sets’ made to look like Iraqi structures and US civilians play roles dressed in Arabic clothing. The two projects complement each other somewhat in my mind.

Beth Edwards’ work looks really saturated and high contrast to me, but together they do create a somewhat dreamy atmosphere out of sometimes everyday moments.
I’ve been meaning to mention Kelli Connell’s photos ever since I saw the first volume of the Midwest Photographers Publication Project. There are plenty of cheesy or posey multiple portraits, but her work is really relaxed, and the ‘interactions’ are believable. It’s another set of work that works better as a whole than as single shots. I’d seen individual photos from her project in other blogs but they never really drew me til I saw a larger body of work in the MP3 monograph.

I was looking through the work of photographers chosen for the last few Critical Masses and thought I’d post some of the pictures I liked this week in honor of this year’s deadline, which just passed yesterday night.
First up are the night landscapes of Amanda Friedman. I’ve always loved the way trees look at night under artificial lighting. It’s a sight that no one’s ever seen before the last hundred years or so. Then there’s Larry Schwarm‘s fire landscapes. (Warning: browser-resizing website and oversharpened photos – you may want to take a look on the Critical Mass site instead. Though his name is misspelled as “Chwarm.” No web luck for Larry.) There’s no info on the website, but I wonder if these are controlled burns. I think everyone has a little bit of an urge to see fires up close, but this is a much better option.
